This database contains Ohio stolen gun information as reported to the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS) by law enforcement agencies throughout the state and authorized for release to the public. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office (AGO), LEADS and the reporting agencies strongly recommend that no citizen take any individual action based on this information. This information must be independently verified by law enforcement and is not to be used as a confirmation or probable cause that any firearm is stolen. Information contained herein should not be relied upon for any type of legal action. Please be advised that the identification number assigned to a particular gun by the manufacturer and/or owner may not be unique; duplicates may exist. The AGO and LEADS cannot represent that this information is current, active, or complete. Whether a stolen property report is active must be verified with either a local law enforcement agency or with the reporting agency.
What is the “serial number”?
The serial number is the unique identifier for the gun. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the serial number must be conspicuously engraved, cast or stamped (impressed) on the firearm frame or receiver. Firearm identification requirements are spelled out in 27 CFR 179.102 and 27 CFR 178.92.
Please note that the identification number assigned to a particular gun by the manufacturer and/or owner may not be unique; duplicates may exist. For example, “ATF has noted cases where some licensed importers have adopted the same serial number for more than one firearm. These instances of duplication have generally occurred when firearms are received from more than one source.” [See Firearms Verification - Marking Requirements in ATF Ruling 75-28.]
