Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Keynote Address at Neighborhood Revitalization Conference

On October 22, 2013, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine gave the keynote address at a neighborhood revitalization conference in Columbus. The conference, "Revitalizing Ohio's Vacant Properties: Tools and Policies to Transform Communities," was sponsored by the Greater Ohio Policy Center and Thriving Communities Institute. The conference discussed techniques and strategies to address vacant and abandoned property challenges and generate redevelopment opportunities.

DeWine devoted $75 million from the 2012 National Mortgage Settlement to help demolish abandoned properties in all 88 Ohio counties. By removing blighted and abandoned homes, neighborhoods are stabilized and can begin the process of rebuilding and revitalization. Under DeWine's leadership, Ohio was commended as the largest state to use 100% of its mortgage settlement dollars on housing and related programs, according to a report by the Enterprise Foundation.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine Testimony on Violent Career Criminal Act

On October 22, 2013, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine offered proponent testimony in the Ohio Senate Criminal Justice Committee on Senate Bill 121, the Violent Career Criminal Act. Sponsored by State Senator Jim Hughes (R-Columbus), the Violent Career Criminal Act is aimed at decreasing violent gun crimes by proposing longer prison sentences for certain repeat offenders convicted of a crime involving a firearm. SB 121 also changes prison terms for some repeat offenders convicted of gun specifications.

Attorney General DeWine Unveils Methamphetamine Container Program

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine unveiled five new methamphetamine chemical storage containers that will help cut costs and save time associated with meth lab clean-up.

The units were installed as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) Authorized Central Storage Container Program and are now regionally located in the following locations:

  • Athens Ohio Highway Patrol Post
  • Canton Ohio Highway Patrol Post
  • Lebanon Ohio Highway Patrol Post
  • Columbus Police Impound Lot
  • Putnam County Sheriff's Office

News Conference on Update on DNA, Drug, and Criminal Identification Initiatives

Attorney General Mike DeWine today will update the media on multiple topics including the hiring of additional scientists to test old rape kits, new legislative efforts to ban synthetic drugs, and new technology aiding in criminal identification.  Attorney General DeWine will also release the latest statistics regarding methamphetamine lab cases across the state.

School Safety Conference Co-Sponsored by Ohio Attorney General's Office

On August 19th, 2013,Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine delivered remarks to attendees at the School Safety & Emergency Management Planning Conference in Columbus. The School Safety & Emergency Management Planning Conference was co-sponsored by the Ohio Attorney General's Office, Buckeye Association of School Administrators (BASA), and the U.S. Department of Education.

Attorney General DeWine released the report of his School Safety Task Force in June, which included a model safety plan for schools and other online resources. DeWine also directed the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) to make Active Shooter training available to school administrators and teachers across Ohio.
