Revised Summary Language Certified for Proposed House Bill 6 Referendum

8/29/2019

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — The Ohio Attorney General’s Office today certified revised summary language for a proposed referendum seeking to repeal House Bill 6.

On Aug. 16, the attorney general’s office received a written petition from Ohioans Against Corporate Bailouts. A previous version of the petition was rejected on Aug. 12.

The attorney general’s role is to determine whether the petition summary is a fair and truthful representation of the measure to be referred. The revised petition meets that requirement.

“Without passing on the advisability of the approval or rejection of the measure … I hereby certify that the summary is a fair and truthful statement of the measure to be referred,” Attorney General Dave Yost said in a letter certifying the petition.

In order for the certified referendum to proceed, the petitioners must collect signatures from registered voters in each of 44 of Ohio’s 88 counties, equal to 3% of the total vote cast in the county for the office of governor at the last gubernatorial election. Total signatures collected statewide must also equal 6% of the total vote cast for the office of governor at the last gubernatorial election.

The petition, containing at least the minimum number of signatures, must be filed with the Secretary of State not later than the effective date of the legislation, which is 90 days after it was filed with the Secretary.
