The Ohio Attorney General’s Office created OHLEG to provide the law enforcement and criminal justice system with quick, secure access to data that helps practitioners to protect the citizens of this state. The rules and regulations also protect the system — including the sources, transmission, storage and generation of criminal justice information — from misuse or mismanagement.
Prohibited is any use of OHLEG that is not directly related to the administration of criminal justice or that is inconsistent with OHLEG security policies, Ohio Revised Code or Ohio Administrative Code, or the criminal justice purposes for which the user was granted OHLEG access.
This includes, but is not limited to, uses motivated by the personal interest of the user or for the user’s commercial benefit.
The division thanks the OHLEG Advisory and Steering committees for their contributions and assistance in developing the rules and regulations that protect the valued system.

OHLEG includes multiple tools aimed at helping law enforcement and the justice system work as efficiently as possible. Some examples:
- Search Engine: This sophisticated tool is used to securely query — using a name, vehicle description, address, tattoo or image — numerous data sources. The app includes a photo lineup wizard and is the most widely used app on OHLEG.
- Records Management System: This customized system allows law enforcement agencies to store incident reports, issue citations and manage property room evidence. It allows for free, easy data export to the Ohio Incident-Based Reporting System and the Ohio Local Law Enforcement Information Sharing Network, also known as OLLEISN.
- Laboratory Online: This app allows county prosecutors to securely track the testing status and results of DNA and other types of evidence that local law enforcement agencies submit to BCI.
- Negative DNA Flag Offender Report: This app helps law enforcement officers see which felony suspects have been arrested but not yet had their DNA collected and sent to BCI for inclusion in the Combined DNA Index System, better known as CODIS.
- School Safety Plans: This app provides comprehensive safety plans that take into account threats and hazards for each school. Building floor plans that identify key infrastructure are among the included information.

OHLEG has helped officers identify arrestees who gave false names, find the drivers of vehicles that endangered civilians and access important criminal histories in the middle of the night. To read stories submitted by the officers who use the system, visit this webpage.
