Attorney General DeWine Announces Violent Career Criminal Act

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Senator Jim Hughes (R-Columbus) will announce legislation this morning aimed at decreasing violent gun crimes. The Violent Career Criminal Act proposes longer prison sentences for certain repeat offenders convicted of a crime involving a firearm. The Act also changes prison terms for some repeat offenders convicted of gun specifications. Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien will also be in attendance.

The in-person training and video include information about what Attorney General law enforcement experts have learned about shooters in prior incidents like Chardon, Columbine, and Virginia Tech. The course also covers how to identify potential threats and reduce the danger of deadly escalation, how to coordinate with school administrators and law enforcement in the face of a real-time threat, and most importantly, how to save lives. "Operation Download" News Conference

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine will release information today on a multi-jurisdictional effort to stop the spread of child pornography. As part of "Operation Download," agents working as part of the Attorney General's Crimes Against Children Initiative served multiple search warrants this morning at homes where child pornography was allegedly downloaded and shared. Attorney General DeWine announced the Crimes Against Children Initiative in late 2011. He will also provide an update on the work done as part of this initiative since it was established.

Attorney General DeWine Announces Home Repair Scam Indictments

On April 15, 2013, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced indictments in a Central Ohio home repair scam that targeted elderly victims and scammed them out of more than $100,000. A few of the suspects indicted were involved in a similar scam and convicted more than a decade ago as part of the "Circleville 30" investigation.

Attorney General DeWine Announces Findings of Foster Care Advisory Group

On April 8, 2013, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine announced the findings of his Foster Care Advisory Group. The group, which he convened after hosting several Child Safety Summits across the state, was tasked with studying Ohio's foster care system and making recommendations to improve care and child safety. DeWine was joined by state legislators who will introduce legislation to enact some the group's recommendations.
