Ohio is being pounded by the opioid crisis. In 2021, the latest year for which data is available, there were 4,573 overdose deaths in the state. “Think of it like a break in an underground water main,” Attorney General Dave Yost said. “We’ve been sandbagging the flooding, but we need to shift our focus to shutting off the water.”
To that end, Attorney General Yost formed the Scientific Committee on Opioid Prevention & Education (SCOPE), a science-based push to reduce the number of people who succumb to substance-use disorder. Experts from medicine, behavioral economics, data analysis and other fields are working together to provide innovative prevention strategies that will, in effect, help shut off the water.
