OPOTC votes to add renewal process for corrections, jailer, bailiff commander certificates

4/24/2017
The Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) voted at its January meeting to add to the requirements for certification for corrections, jailer, and bailiff basic training school commanders to bring them in line with certification changes in 2016 to peace officer basic and private security basic school commanders.

The changes call for new commanders applying after July 2017 to complete a commander training program approved by the OPOTC executive director.

Also, all commanders will be required to renew their certificates every five years. To be eligible for renewal, the applicant must have, within the past five years, conducted at least two training schools attended at least one commander conference, and completed at least 24 hours of relevant training.

The changes voted on must be filed with the Joint Committee on Agency Rule Review (JCARR), where they will undergo a hearing within 40 days. If JCARR signs off on the changes, they will go into effect on July 1, 2017.
