On the Job 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio chalked up a repeat win on July 12 during the second annual “quickball” tournament organized by the office of Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation.
 
Children from youth groups throughout the state played the fast-paced version of baseball  at the Resolute Athletic Complex in Columbus as part of the Ohio Badges for Baseball program.
 
The event also featured teams from the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton, Boys & Girls Club of Lorain County, and Boys & Girls Club of Youngstown. 
 
The tournament, played in a round-robin format, gave participants the opportunity to interact with kids from across Ohio, demonstrate teamwork and sportsmanship, and practice healthy habits. 
 
Since 2011, the Ohio Badges for Baseball program, a partnership of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, has been present in nine communities throughout Ohio — Canton, Dayton, Hamilton, Lima, Lorain, Springfield, Toledo, Youngstown and Zanesville. 
 
The program pairs local law enforcement and youths to help build character and teach critical life lessons through an academic leadership program and the game of baseball.
 

Summer camp memories

 
Thirty-five Ohio youths and nine mentors traveled in June to Aberdeen, Md., to participate in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation’s summer camp.
 
Campers had the opportunity to interact with more than 120 other kids from nine states.
 
The children who attended the camp took part in a number of instructional stations where they learned the basic fundamentals of being a baseball or softball player. 
 
They also learned life skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership.
The kids were coached by a variety of law enforcement mentors ranging from U.S. Marshals to the Maryland State Police.
