Badges for Baseball kids tour OSU
8/23/2016
About 130 children from throughout Ohio had a chance to experience college life and sports during a daylong event hosted by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation.
The kids, who are from area community youth groups that are partners in the foundation’s Badges for Baseball program, participated in College Experience Day on April 23 at The Ohio State University.
The children took part in a baseball skills clinic, a tour of the campus, and an interactive presentation by OSU representatives. Each child received a backpack and a T-shirt featuring Cal Ripken Sr.’s No. 7.
The kids ended their day watching an OSU women’s lacrosse game.
The event is designed to expose children to college life and show them that they can achieve college education through hard work and dedication.
The Attorney General’s Office, in partnership with the foundation, provides financial support, equipment, special events, an overnight summer camp opportunity, and a youth development curriculum in order to teach life lessons such as teamwork, communication, and respect while building positive, healthy relationships with law enforcement mentors.
Since its inception in Ohio, the Badges for Baseball program has served more than 2,358 young people in Canton, Dayton, Hamilton, Lima, Lorain, Springfield, Toledo, Youngstown, and Zanesville.
