Attorney General DeWine focuses on protecting families

2/10/2011

On Jan. 10, Mike DeWine took office as Ohio’s 50th attorney general.

In his inaugural remarks, Attorney General DeWine explained his top priority: to protect families. He said it is especially important to protect the most vulnerable among us.

For instance, when aging parents or grandparents are being misled, the attorney general’s role is to protect them from fly-by-night con artists. When young families are just starting out, the attorney general works to protect that family from mortgage fraud.

The Consumer Protection Section of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office continues to be a strong advocate for consumers, protecting them from scams and fighting for their rights.

Before taking office in his current position, Attorney General DeWine started his career as a county prosecutor. He continued to protect victims through his work in the U.S Congress, where he served four terms as a congressman and received numerous awards from victim rights organizations. He also served as Ohio lieutenant governor, where he worked to reform the state’s parole system.

Michael DeWine was born on January 5, 1947, in Springfield, Ohio, and grew up in Yellow Springs. He married his high school sweetheart Frances Struewing while both were students at Miami University. After graduating from Miami, DeWine attended Ohio Northern Law School, and was awarded his JD degree in 1972. The DeWines are the parents of eight children and the grandparents of 15 grandchildren.
