(COLUMBUS, Ohio) — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced today that the University of Cincinnati College of Law earned top honors at his office’s Public Service Mock Trial Competition for law school students.
The competition, which took place Friday at the Franklin County Courthouse, featured eight teams of students from six Ohio law schools.
“This is an unmatched opportunity for students to take their knowledge from the classroom to the courtroom,” Yost said. “All of these future attorneys are now better prepared for their upcoming legal careers because of this experience working with proven litigators in a real courtroom setting.”
The teams received case information in September and were coached by experienced public-sector litigators from across the state. On Friday, they presented each side of the case in two separate rounds, which were judged by public-service judges, litigators and private practitioners.
The following teams received the highest overall scores in this year’s competition:
- First place: The University of Cincinnati College of Law
- Second place: Ohio Northern University College of Law
- Third place: Capital University Law School
Members of the University of Cincinnati’s winning team include: Spencer Campbell, Stephen Johnson, Cecelia Tio and Norbert Wessels. The students were coached by Bart Cosgrove and Lisa Treleven, both from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Public Service Mock Trial Competition is designed to provide a valuable learning opportunity for Ohio law school students and to expose them to public-service legal careers.
