Former Candidate for Prosecutor Convicted on Public Corruption Charges

3/25/2016

(CLEVELAND)—A former candidate for Mahoning County Prosecutor was convicted today by a Cuyahoga County jury on public corruption charges.

Martin Yavorcik, 42, of Boardman, was convicted on the following eight counts:

  • One count of Engaging in a Pattern of Corrupt Activity, a felony of the first degree
  • One count of Conspiracy, a felony of the second degree
  • Three counts of Bribery, felonies of the third degree
  • One count of Tampering with Records, a felony of the third degree
  • Two counts of Money Laundering, felonies of the third degree
Yavorcik was convicted of participating in a criminal conspiracy which illegally tried to hinder Mahoning County from purchasing the Oakhill Renaissance Place complex and subsequently tried to cover up the criminal activity. Yavorcik’s specific role in the conspiracy was that he ran for Mahoning County Prosecutor in 2008 under the assumption he would end the criminal investigation into the Oakhill matter. He also received improper benefits, including cash, for this endeavor.

Sentencing is scheduled for April 22nd.

Two co-defendants, former Mahoning County Commissioner John McNally and former Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino, previously pleaded guilty in February for their roles in the public corruption case. They are scheduled to be sentenced on March 28th in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.

The case was jointly prosecuted by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.
