(CLEVELAND) – Attorney General Mike DeWine announced today that the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) is now leading the investigation regarding Thursday's shooting incident involving 13 Cleveland police officers.
Two people were killed.
At the request of local authorities, BCI took the lead in investigating the case as part of a special investigative team that also includes detectives with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office and the East Cleveland Police Department.
"The Ohio Attorney General's BCI agents are experienced in investigating officer-involved shootings. I've tasked them with pursuing this case aggressively, to go wherever the facts take them, and to track down every lead," said Attorney General DeWine. "We want to ensure the community that this will be fully and fairly investigated."
Upon completion of the investigation, the Attorney General's Office will report its findings to Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty.
"This incident included a lengthy police chase through many communities. We urge anyone who saw anything that might assist in this investigation to call BCI at 855-BCI-OHIO," said Attorney General DeWine.
