Attorney General DeWine Reminds Sirius XM Customers to File Restitution Claims Before May 4

4/28/2015

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today reminded consumers that they should file claims before May 4 to be considered for reimbursement under an Ohio-led multistate settlement with Sirius XM Radio Inc. of New York.

The agreement, which was reached in December, resolved claims that the satellite radio company engaged in misleading advertising and billing practices.

To be considered for restitution under the settlement, consumers generally must have a complaint that meets all of the following criteria:

  • The complaint must concern Sirius XM conduct that occurred between July 28, 2008, and Dec. 4, 2014;
  • The complaint must involve an identifiable loss (meaning consumers paid money); and
  • The complaint must be unresolved (meaning it has not yet been settled with the consumer’s state attorney general or with Sirius XM).

Ohio consumers should contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515 to file a complaint.

Consumers also can contact Sirius XM directly with their complaints either by mail at PO Box 33059, Detroit MI  48232-5059, or online at www.siriusxm.com/settlementprogram.

“Consumers who were customers of Sirius XM in the last few years may be eligible to receive money back under this settlement,” Attorney General DeWine said. “We encourage eligible consumers to take advantage of this opportunity and to file their claims before May 4.”/p>

Under the settlement, Sirius XM agreed to make significant changes to its business practices, such as clearly disclosing important terms and conditions about billing and automatic renewals, providing advance notice to consumers whose plans are about to renew automatically, and making it easier for consumers to cancel their plans.

Consumers who have questions about the settlement or those who want to file a complaint should contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515.
