On August 16, 1994 at 6:15 am, Springfield Police and the Springfield Fire Divisions responded to a house fire at 17 Miller Street. Upon their arrival, the residence was fully engulfed in flames. Nine of the ten people inside, who had been asleep, were able to get out of the house. Adults inside the residence were able to drop children from a second story window in order to save their lives. Four year old Avery Bailum ran and hid beneath his bed and could not be located in time to save him. Arson investigators determined the cause of the fire to be a flammable liquid which had been poured on the porch and set on fire. Anyone with information on the death of this child is asked to come forward.
