(ASHLAND, Ohio)—Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today announced a lawsuit against a northern Ohio home improvement contractor accused of doing incomplete and shoddy work for Ohio consumers.
The lawsuit, filed in the Ashland County Common Pleas Court, accuses Global Home Solutions LLC and its owner Jeffrey Workman, of Nova, of failing to deliver promised services, performing substandard or shoddy work, and failing to give consumers receipts for their deposits. The Attorney General seeks restitution for affected consumers and an end to any violations of Ohio’s Consumer Sales Practices Act.
“An unfinished home repair project can significantly disrupt someone’s daily life,” Attorney General DeWine said. “In this case, consumers paid thousands of dollars for work that was never completed as promised. We’re seeking refunds for affected consumers and compliance with Ohio’s consumer protection laws.”
Four consumers have filed complaints against Global Home Solutions reporting total losses of about $8,400. Consumers said they paid for home improvement projects, such as garage or deck installations, that were not completed.
Attorney General DeWine encouraged consumers to research home improvement contractors before hiring them. Tips to avoid problems include:
- Check with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Better Business Bureau to determine if other consumers have filed complaints against the company. Also search for information online using the company’s name and the individual’s name.
- Ask family, friends, and neighbors for the names of contractors they’d recommend. Consider asking a contractor to provide references of past customers, and contact those customers to ask about their experiences.
- Do not provide full payment up front. Pay when the work is finished, or pay in installments as portions of the job are completed. For example, it may be reasonable to pay one-third of the total cost in the beginning, one-third in the middle, and the final third after the work is complete. Make sure the payment terms are outlined in writing before any work begins.
Consumers who suspect an unfair or deceptive practice should contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515.
