(CEDARVILLE, Ohio) -- Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Cedarville Police Chief Chris Gillaugh announced today that a Logan County man was arrested in Indiana following the theft of approximately $30,000 from Cedarville University.
Agents with the Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) assisted Cedarville Police in arresting Andrew Davis, 30, of West Liberty on charges of safe cracking, grand theft, and breaking and entering on Tuesday.
Davis, who previously worked for a food service company used by Cedarville University, is accused of breaking into a school administrative building on three separate occasions and stealing several hundred to several thousands of dollars in cash on each occasion. Davis is accused of stealing approximately $30,000 during the most recent incident, which happened on Saturday.
Authorities served search warrants Tuesday at Davis' home in West Liberty, as well as on his vehicle in Indiana where approximately $20,000 in cash was located and seized.
"Through good police work, police in Cedarville identified the suspect, and we helped track the individual down to Indiana," said Attorney General DeWine. "This arrest is the result of the excellent teamwork between state and local authorities, university security, and authorities in Indiana."
"It is very helpful that BCI is available through Attorney General DeWine's office to assist smaller departments because we don't have the resources that they do," said Chief Gillaugh. "I'm glad that we were able to work together to bring this case to a close."
Surveillance cameras on the Cedarville University campus also played a significant role in assisting authorities in identifying the suspect.
Davis is currently in the Miami County Jail in Peru, Indiana, awaiting extradition back to Greene County.
Attorneys with Greene County Prosecutor Stephen Haller's office will prosecute the case, and additional charges are possible.
Cedarville University school administrators, Cedarville University Campus Safety, the West Liberty Police Department, Bellefontaine Police Police Department, Converse (Indiana) Police Department, Marion (Indiana) Police Department, and Miami County (Indiana) Sheriff's Office assisted in the investigation.
