OPOTA Advanced Certificate Programs

The Master Criminal Investigator certification recognizes peace officers who have successfully completed advanced training in criminal investigations. Applicants must complete at least 264 hours of approved training, including 200 core hours and a minimum of 64 elective hours within the previous five years, before taking the OPOTA practical examination.
By completing the Master Criminal Investigator Certificate Program, investigators will be better prepared to handle complex investigations with a well-rounded skill set. They’ll be able to approach cases with a strategic mindset, whether they’re investigating a homicide, sexual assault, or gathering crucial evidence through proper search warrant procedures. Additionally, the hands-on nature of the required training courses ensures that these skills are not just theoretical but directly applicable in the field.

Core Courses (200 Hours)

• Core Criminal Investigation (40 hrs) – Comprehensive foundation on investigative procedures, evidence collection, and case preparation.
• Sex Crimes Investigation (24 hrs) – Specialized techniques for investigating sexual assault and related offenses.
• Cyber Crime First Responder (8 hrs) – Initial response, evidence preservation, and digital evidence handling in cyber incidents.
• Death Investigation (40 hrs) – Protocols for scene management, evidence gathering, and cause-of-death determinations.
• Drug Identification and Field Testing (8 hrs) – Recognition and testing of street drugs.
• Latent Print Development (16 hrs) – Developing and lifting latent fingerprints from various surfaces.
• Interview and Interrogation (24 hrs) – Conducting lawful, effective interviews and interrogations (Reid 24-hr version also accepted).
• Internet Investigations (32 hrs) – Techniques for online crime investigation and evidence gathering.
• Photography for Investigators (8 hrs) or Crime Scene Photography I (40 hrs) – Documenting crime scenes effectively with photographs.

Assessment

Submit completed application for verification. Receive and complete the practical exam at OPOTA Main Campus in London, Ohio. OPOTA reviews and issues certification upon passing.
 

The Master Evidence Technician certification recognizes advanced training in evidence handling, crime scene processing, and forensic documentation. Applicants must complete at least 260 hours of approved training, 200 core hours plus a minimum of 60 elective hours taken in the last five years, and pass both written and practical exams administered by OPOTA.

• Evidence Technician (80 hrs) – Foundational evidence collection, documentation, and processing.
• Bloodstain Evidence (40 hrs) – Analysis and interpretation of bloodstain patterns at crime scenes.
• Crime Scene Photography I (40 hrs) – Fundamentals of photographing crime scenes.
• Crime Scene Photography II (40 hrs) – Advanced photographic techniques for complex crime scenes.

Assessment

Written Exam: 200-question multiple choice (100 questions from Crime Scene Photography by Edward Robinson, 2nd or 3rd ed.; 100 from Practical Crime Scene Processing by Ross Gardner, 2nd ed.). Practical Exam: Hands-on testing of evidence technician skills at OPOTA’s London or Richfield campus. Recertification: Required every 5 years (practical exam or casework demonstration).
 

This program delivers a strategically developed and mission-focused approach to tactical training. By integrating critical components (legal standards, leadership principles, emergency medical response, and specialized tactical skills) it equips officers with a versatile and operationally relevant skill set. The training consists of eight focused courses, totaling 80 hours of rigorous, real-world instruction designed to enhance readiness and performance across a wide range of field scenarios.

• Conflict Resolution & De-Escalation – 8 hours
• Self-Aid Buddy Aid (TCCC) – 4 hours
