James advised his family that he was going overseas. His family reported him missing after they had no contact with him for a year. They did not file a missing persons report earlier because Lohrey traveled internationally and would frequently drop out of sight without warning. In 2007, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in Maine discovered Lohrey's 1996 Pontiac Firebird in a parking lot off Route 96 in the Ocean Point area of East Boothbay. After the car was towed away, a residence stated the car had been there for most of the summer.
