Dispelling Myths & Misconceptions/Interacting With the Middle Eastern Population

8/31/2016
OPOTA’s Dispelling Myths & Misconceptions course is designed to give peace officers insight into interacting with people from Middle Eastern countries and those of the Muslim faith.

The course provides the student with a basic understanding of the faith, its origins, major tenets and the role of religion in the Arab community and the Muslim family. Through lecture and the presentation of situational scenarios, the student is expected to understand aspects of the Muslim faith that are most relevant to the law enforcement environment and the potential impact on law enforcement operations in Arab households and the Arab community.

The student will be presented with information regarding the most prominent biases and stereotypical misperceptions held by non-Muslims and their factual counters. After completing the course, the student will have a better understanding of the safety risks associated with encounters with citizens of the Muslim faith in various operational environments and will be better able to address those risks in an informed, intelligent, and respectful manner.
