Peace Officer Basic Training Schools beginning on or after July 1, 2012
- Human trafficking training is effective for all OPOTC approved peace officer basic training schools that start on or after July 1, 2012.
- The mandated training will be provided through an addendum for Topic 3-6, Missing Children Investigation. The current 3-6 lesson plan and the addendum must be presented to the students.
- Neither the name of the topic nor the hour requirement will change.
- The updated lesson plan will be posted on OHLEG as soon as operationally possible.
- No instructor update is required. Peace officer basic training instructors currently approved for Topic 3-6, Missing Children Investigation may teach the addendum containing the human trafficking training component.
- Please make your instructor aware of this new requirement.
Peace Office Basic Training Schools that began prior to July 1, 2012
- Any peace officer basic training school that started prior to July 1, 2012, may incorporate the human trafficking lesson plan into their current academy.
- HB 262 also changed R.C. 109.73 to include advanced in-service training programs for peace officers, and added R.C. 109.745 which requires training for peace officers in investigation and handling of violations of the Trafficking in Persons statute. In short, open enrollment students will need to complete the training before they are certified and appointed officers will need to complete upon having a break-in-service.
- School commanders who elect to add the human trafficking training to their current basic training school, must note it on the SF185unv, Notification of Changes in Course Schedule and on the SF105unv, School Calendar.
- If Topic 3-6, Missing Children Investigation has already been taught or is going to be incorporated, it can be noted on the SF185 and SF105 as Topic 3-6, Missing Children/Human Trafficking.
- Approved peace officer basic training school commanders may offer the human trafficking training as a stand-alone update training school or allow plug-in students to enroll in currently approved peace officer basic training schools in which the topic has not yet been taught.
