Save the date for Oct. 28–29 Law Enforcement Conference

7/23/2014
The Ohio Attorney General’s 2014 Law Enforcement Conference features an emphasis on crimes against older adults, including a special track of workshops and a general-session presentation. Set for Oct. 28–29 at the Hyatt Regency Columbus, the conference also offers top-notch speakers, the Distinguished Law Enforcement Awards Luncheon, and 30 workshops.

This year’s theme is Protecting Ohio’s Seniors. Related workshops will cover financial crimes against the elderly, interactions between law enforcement and seniors, recognizing and investigating elder abuse, and safety considerations for older drivers. Other workshop tracks relate to crimes against children, emerging crime problems, management and technology, and legal issues. Several workshops will offer continuing legal education credit.

This year’s speakers:
  • Bobby Smith, a retired Louisiana state trooper and internationally recognized speaker, was left blind when a violent offender shot him in the face in 1986. The author of three books, he holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a master’s degree in education, and a doctorate in counseling psychology. He speaks with poignancy and humor about life’s challenges and triumphs.
  • James A. White Sr. is a senior master training coach and owner of Performance Consulting Services in Columbus. He develops and offers workforce training, executive coaching, and counseling. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology, is now pursuing his master’s, and has written extensively about personal and professional empowerment.
  • Michael LaRiviere is a member of the Salem, Mass., Police Department, while Ursel McElroy is deputy director of education and policy for the Attorney General’s Crime Victim Services Section and leads the office’s Elder Justice Initiative. They will share their experiences responding to elder abuse.
The $75 registration fee covers general sessions, workshops, and breakfast and lunch both days, including the Distinguished Law Enforcement Awards Luncheon. Online registration will be available soon at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/LEConference.
