Shotgun Qualification Course of Fire

7/9/2013

Dear Commanding Officer, Firearms Instructor, and Peace Officer Basic Training Commander:

The attached Shotgun Qualification Course of Fire was approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission on September 19, 2012. Beginning January 1, 2013, law enforcement agencies may use this course of fire and target as an alternative to the current standard. The use of the course of fire and target will be mandatory for all Ohio law enforcement agencies beginning January 1, 2014. This qualification course is to be used with the attached RQT-2 target. The new course of fire and target will also apply to all Peace Officer Basic Training Schools beginning on or after January 1, 2014.

This course of fire is a minimum standard. Agencies are encouraged to supplement this course with firearms training, to include low-light, move and shoot, transition, multiple target drills, and reviews of legal justification of and departmental policy for deadly force application.   Questions concerning this or any other training issue can be directed to askOPOTA@ohioattorneygeneral.gov.  Thank you for your service to the citizens of our state.

Sincerely,

Mary E. Davis
Interim Executive Director
Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission
