(COLUMBUS, Ohio)— Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is reminding Ohioans to take advantage of the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which will take place across the country on Saturday.
Ohioans can dispose of unwanted or unneeded prescription medications at more than 200 locations in the state on Saturday, September 27, 2014, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
"Prescription drugs, when taken improperly or without a prescription, can be very addictive and can sometimes can lead to the abuse of other drugs such as heroin," said Attorney General DeWine. "When residents properly dispose of their unneeded medications, they are playing a very important role in the fight against addiction."
"Our coordinated effort working with local and state agencies in Ohio has resulted in thousands of pounds of unneeded medications," said DEA Columbus Resident Agent in Charge Kenneth Etchison. "We continue to work with Attorney General DeWine’s office to ensure the continued success of this program."
According to the DEA, eight previous nationwide Take-Back events have removed more than 4.1 million pounds of prescription drugs from circulation.
Only pills and other solid prescriptions, such as patches, can be brought to the collection site. Liquids and needles will not be accepted.
