(COLUMBUS, Ohio) -- Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was pleased to learn that the Urban Outfitters retail chain has announced plans to stop sales of its "Prescription Line" of glasses, coasters, mugs, and drink holders.
"These products were not funny. They promoted prescription drug abuse, which is a very serious problem in Ohio and many other states across the country," said Attorney General DeWine.
Attorney General DeWine requested that Urban Outfitters discontinue the product line last month.
Nearly two dozen attorneys generals from across the country joined Attorney General DeWine in signing a letter sent to CEO Richard Hayne saying that the highly recognizable labels on the products undermine efforts to educate the public about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
In a statement released to the media last week, a spokesperson from Urban Outfitters said that the company was "electing to discontinue these few styles from our current product offering."
Upon taking office in 2011, Attorney General DeWine made the fight against prescription drug abuse a priority. Since that time, the Attorney General's Office has been involved in the permanent license revocation of more than two dozen doctors and pharmacists who improperly prescribed prescription medication, the conviction of 13 doctors, pharmacists, traffickers and associates, and the seizure of more than $1.67 million worth of prescription pills.
