7/27/12 Email to Commanders - First Aid topic - Instructor Requirements and Field Agent Opening Audit Procedure

7/30/2012

Peace Officer and Private Security Commanders,

As you should be aware, the First-Aid topic is now a mandatory skill in the majority of the Commission’s basic programs; the most recent additions being in the Peace Officer and Private Security programs, effective July 1, 2012.  These recent changes also require the school commander and/or instructor to submit documents to the certifying organization to obtain students’ certification. The following points are provided to clarify what is provided in your respective Commander Manual:

  • At the school opening, POBT School Commander will advise Field Agent which nationally recognized First Aid/CPR/AED program will be applied and provide documentation of the current required student to instructor ratios for that program.
  • At the school opening, Commander will provide current nationally recognized First Aid/CPR/AED instructor certifications, for the applied program, for all instructors listed on the opening school calendar.  The number of instructors must meet ratios for the applied program and the instructor must be OPOTC approved to teach the topic.  They must also all be currently certified in the applied program.  If they are currently certified in the applied program but are not OPOTC instructors the Commander must also provide completed OPOTC Special Subject First Aid/CPR/AED instructor applications for those not OPOTC certified instructors.
  • Any submitted OPOTC Special Subject First Aid/CPR/AED instructor applications submitted at the opening audit will be processed forthwith by the appropriate certification officer.

As always, please contact your assigned Certification or Compliance Officer with any questions about these changes.  You may also contact the Education and Policy Section, at 740-845-2700, for any specific curriculum questions.
