Pre-entrance Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) Policy Change Effective 1/12/2017

1/13/2017

Peace Officer Basic Commander:

As you are aware, as a result of a recommendation made by the Attorney General’s Advisory Group on Law Enforcement Training and a subsequent decision by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission, a pre-entrance physical fitness assessment (PFA) standard went into effect for peace officer basic training (POBT) academies that begin on or after January 1, 2017.   In order to be eligible to attend POBT, prospective students are required to meet the 15th percentile of the Cooper Institute Standard for age and gender norms.  The pre-entrance PFA must be completed prior to the school’s opening audit and the score must be documented on the SF195bas.

Previously, it was determined that a passing score will be valid as early as 90 days before the academy start date.  After receiving feedback from the field that the 90 day timeframe is creating hardship for academies admitting officers hired prior to POBT and that an adjustment will not minimize the requirement’s purpose, that time frame has been changed.  Effective immediately, a passing score is now valid as early as 120 days before the academy start date.  The July 1, 2017 Commander Manual will reflect this change.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Professional Standards Section if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mary E. Davis, Executive Director
