On September 7, 1997, Martha F. Oelman was found lying face down on her bed. Oelman was killed by blunt force trauma to the back of her head. Oelman was believed to have been killed 24-48 hours earlier. Oelman was found by two friends after she failed to arrive at a scheduled event in the Columbus, Ohio area. At the time of the incident, the Sugarcreek Township Police investigated the case until all leads were exhausted.
