The Markley children returned from school to find nobody at home. They found things out of place like an unlocked gun cabinet with no guns missing and an lock box was found open with the contents pulled out and sitting on a dresser. John's pickup truck was missing and was later found locked and abandoned 10 miles from home. The Markley's cell phone was found inside the truck. A $1,000 check made out to cash was written on the day of their disappearance. The drive-through bank teller remembers John driving, Shelly writing the check on the dashboard and another man sitting next to Shelly in the truck.
