Kathern left a note saying she was going to the mall. Her car was found abandoned 25 miles from her home, the day after she was reported missing. Her car was found near the apartment of a coworker, Christopher Below. In 2003, Christopher Below confessed to shooting Kathern in his apartment. He claims to have disposed of her remains in a trash bin.
