The Appeals Section represents the state of Ohio and its agencies on appeals in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the Ohio Supreme Court.
The section handles a wide range of cases, from civil rights to election disputes to criminal law and more. The section determines the cases in which the state of Ohio will seek U.S. or Ohio Supreme Court review and the positions the state will take before those courts. The Appeals Section attorneys prepare the petitions, briefs, and other papers filed by the state on appeal. They also regularly participate in oral arguments before those courts.
The Attorney General’s Office provides a wide array of services and tools to support the important work of law enforcement and prosecutors. The Attorney General often supports the legal positions of others by filing amicus briefs.
Following are the criminal law subjects that the Attorney General’s Office has recently addressed through amicus briefs. Included are links to the court’s decisions and the Attorney General’s briefing, all of which are intended as helpful resources for county prosecutors who may be litigating these subjects.
