Basic Emergency Vehicle Operations
This course is a modified emergency vehicle operations lesson plan from the Peace Officer Basic Training Curriculum Driving Unit. In a classroom setting, the student will learn non-emergency/emergency and pursuit driving theory. The student will also learn the required driving skills taught in the basic academy practical exercises. The course is offered to those who did not have driving as a part of their basic program or to students who wish to refresh skills or have had driving difficulties. Outside exercises may require foul weather equipment.
Note: Vehicles for practical exercises will be provided. Helmets will be provided, however, students may bring their own DOT-certified helmet, if desired. Students will be outside on the driving course regardless of the weather. Foul weather and hot weather clothing is recommended. Students are required to bring a copy of their department emergency response and pursuit policy. All students must bring a current driver’s/operator’s license. Shoes or boots which lace and completely cover the entire foot are mandatory. Students will not be permitted to drive with sandal-type footwear.
