Identity Theft
What is Identity Theft?
With more information available online, criminals have greater opportunities to steal personal information. Consumers must protect themselves.
Identity theft occurs when a criminal obtains and uses someone else’s personal information -- credit card numbers, bank account numbers, insurance information or Social Security number -- to purchase goods or services fraudulently.
Identity theft is a state and federal crime. Those who think they are a victim of identity theft should immediately contact their local police department or sheriff’s office and file a police report.
Identity Theft Verification PASSPORT Program Discontinued
The Identity Theft Verification PASSPORT Program began in 2004 with funding from the U.S. Department of Justice. Due to a decrease in participation, a lack of recognition of the program from creditors and financial entities, and more federal resources to help with identity verification, the program was discontinued in 2011. Every effort was taken to process pending applications, though some pending applicants did not receive the PASSPORT card. All affected parties were notified and provided alternative resources.
